What Is a GFCI Outlet and Why Does It Matter?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet monitors the flow of current through a circuit. If even a small imbalance is detected, which happens when electricity is taking an unintended path, such as through a person, it trips in milliseconds, fast enough to prevent electrocution.

In older homes, these areas were often wired without GFCI protection because it wasn’t required at the time. Bringing your home up to current standards is a safety improvement, not just a code formality, and it’s required whenever a permit is pulled for other work in those areas.

A GFCI outlet that “stopped working” may simply need to be reset (the test/reset buttons on the face), or it may be detecting a real fault. We’ll tell you which.

Frequently Asked Questions

An outlet in my home stopped working, what should I check first?

Check for a tripped GFCI outlet. GFCI outlets can protect multiple outlets downstream, so an outlet that’s dead might be on the load side of a GFCI outlet in another room or in the garage. Look for GFCI outlets with a reset button (typically in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, and outdoors) and press reset. If that doesn’t fix it, call us.

My outlet feels warm or makes a noise when I plug something in, is that normal?

No. A warm outlet or one that buzzes, crackles, or sparks when a plug is inserted has a wiring problem. Stop using it and call us.

Can I add an outlet in my garage or outside?

Yes, this is one of our most common requests. We run a proper circuit from the panel, install a weatherproof (WR) rated outlet outdoors or a standard outlet in the garage, and permit the work.

What's the difference between GFCI and AFCI?

GFCI protects against ground faults (the kind that can electrocute). AFCI protects against arc faults (the kind that can start fires). They address different hazards and are required in different locations. Many modern circuits require both. We’ll make sure your home has the right protection in the right places.

How do I know if my older home has enough outlets?

A general indicator: if you rely heavily on extension cords or power strips, you likely don’t have enough outlets for how you’re using the space. We can assess and add circuits and outlets where needed.
